Petrila is a historic mining town in the Jiu Valley, positioned at the foot of the Parâng Mountains in Hunedoara County. Its modern history began in 1859 with the opening of its first coal mine, which grew to become the deepest in Romania. For over a century and a half, the city’s pulse was determined by the shifts at the mine, creating a tough but tight-knit community of workers from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Following the permanent closure of the mine in 2015, Petrila has undergone a remarkable transformation. Instead of fading away, the town has become a hub for underground art and cultural activism, centered around the 'Planet Petrila' project. The industrial architecture of the defunct mine is now used for exhibitions, theater, and concerts, led by the visionary artist Ion Barbu. Petrila is also the birthplace of the renowned philosopher and writer Ion D. Sîrbu. Its geographic location in the Eastern Jiu Valley makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the wild landscapes of the Southern Carpathians. Today, Petrila stands as a symbol of post-industrial resilience, where the heavy echoes of mining machinery have been replaced by the animated voices of contemporary culture.
