Bănița Gorges Nature Reserve (Romania)

Weather…

The Bănița Gorges Nature Reserve, located near Petroșani in Hunedoara County, is a spectacular geological phenomenon. The gorges were carved by the Bănița stream into limestone rocks and are distinguished by their extremely narrow passage and high, winding walls that feature overhanging sections. The white limestone creates a striking visual contrast with the clear water and surrounding vegetation. In the immediate vicinity, there are other historical and natural landmarks, such as Bolii Cave and the ruins of the Bănița Dacian fortress, which once guarded the access to the Jiu Valley. Due to their short length, the gorges are easy to navigate, although in some places the path requires walking directly through the shallow stream bed. It is a good spot for photography and short nature explorations, tucked away from the region's main traffic routes.
