Deva Fortress sits atop a steep volcanic cone overlooking the city of Deva in Hunedoara County and is considered one of Transylvania's most vital medieval strongholds. First documented in 1269, it served as a crucial strategic defensive point controlling the Mureș Valley trade and military routes. Over the centuries, the fortress was held and expanded by various rulers, including Transylvanian princes and the Habsburgs, resulting in a complex system of three concentric defensive rings. A catastrophic explosion of the ammunition depot in 1849 destroyed much of the structure, effectively ending its military service. In recent years, the fortress has undergone significant restoration and is now easily accessible via a modern funicular. The ruins offer sweeping panoramic views of the Mureș River and the surrounding mountain ranges, making it one of Western Romania's most visited historical landmarks.
