💡 Tips

  • The monumental murals are spread across the residential blocks; download the 'Monumental Art Collection' map or join a guided walking tour.
  • Zaspa is primarily residential; for extensive dining options, you may want to head towards Wrzeszcz or the main Gdańsk city center.
  • Look up! The murals are often painted on the windowless gable walls of the high-rise buildings, meaning you need to step back to see them fully.
  • You can easily reach Zaspa via the SKM (Fast Urban Railway) network from anywhere in the Tricity area.
  • The district was built on a former airport; you can still trace the old runway layout in the arrangement of the streets and buildings.

Zaspa-Młyniec is not a typical tourist destination, but a fascinating example of urban transformation and public art. This district of Gdańsk, composed mainly of large concrete residential blocks from the communist era, is home to the Zaspa Collection of Monumental Painting. With over 60 giant murals created by artists from all over the world, the district is one of the largest open-air street art galleries in Europe. The works deal with historical, social, and cultural themes, transforming the grey architecture into an animated canvas. The district also has a significant historical dimension: it was the residence of Lech Wałęsa, the leader of the Solidarity movement and later president of Poland, during the crucial years of the fight against communism. A walk through Zaspa is therefore a journey through recent Polish history and contemporary art. There are guided tours that explain the stories behind the murals and the history of the place. Zaspa is easily accessible from the centre of Gdańsk by tram or train (SKM). The best way to explore the area is on foot or by bicycle. As it is a residential area, the visit is free all year round. A visit in late spring or summer has the best light to admire the colours and details of the huge works of art.
