Wolf's Lair (Poland)

Weather…

The Wolf's Lair (Wolfsschanze) near Gierłoż in the Masurian woods was Adolf Hitler's primary military headquarters on the Eastern Front during World War II. Built starting in 1940 specifically for the invasion of the Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa), this top-secret complex featured over 200 structures, including 80 massive reinforced concrete bunkers with walls up to 8 meters thick. Hitler spent over 800 days here between June 1941 and November 1944, directing major military campaigns. The site was heavily fortified with minefields, anti-aircraft guns, and elaborate camouflage to hide it from aerial detection. It is most famous as the location of the July 20, 1944, assassination attempt led by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who detonated a briefcase bomb during a briefing. Although the retreating German army attempted to blow up the bunkers in early 1945, the immense ruins survived and are now open to the public as a museum. The haunting remains of the shattered concrete blocks serve as a grim reminder of the scale of Nazi military infrastructure and the pivotal events of the war's final years.
