Kętrzyn, formerly known as Rastenburg, is a historic city in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in northeastern Poland. Founded in the 14th century by the Teutonic Order, the town was a vital stronghold during the colonization of Prussia. Its most prominent landmark is the well-preserved Teutonic Castle from the 14th century, which now houses a museum dedicated to local history and culture. During World War II, the town's surroundings gained notoriety for the 'Wolf's Lair' (Wolfsschanze), Adolf Hitler's military headquarters, located just a few kilometers to the east in the Gierłoż forests. After 1945, the city was renamed in honor of Wojciech Kętrzyński, a Polish historian and activist. Today, Kętrzyn serves as an important regional hub and a gateway for tourists exploring the Masurian Lake District, blending its Teutonic heritage with Masurian nature and post-war Polish identity.
