Ostrów Lednicki (Poland)

Weather…

The island of Ostrów Lednicki in Lake Lednica is one of the most crucial sites connected to the origins of the Polish state. In the 10th and 11th centuries, it hosted a massive timber-and-earth stronghold containing the palatium and chapel of Poland's first historical ruler, Mieszko I, and his son Bolesław the Brave. Archaeological discoveries, including two masonry baptismal fonts found in the chapel ruins, strongly suggest that this was the site of the 'Baptism of Poland' in 966, the monumental event that brought Poland into Christian Europe. Today, the island serves as an open-air archaeological museum where visitors can view the preserved ruins of the pre-Romanesque palace complex and experience the atmosphere of the early Middle Ages.
