Nysa, one of the oldest cities in Silesia, is located on the Nysa Kłodzka River and is historically known as the 'Silesian Rome' due to its magnificent sacral architecture. For centuries, the city served as the capital of the Duchy of Nysa under the rule of the Prince-Bishops of Wrocław, making it a prominent religious and political center. The city's skyline is dominated by the monumental Basilica of St. James and St. Agnes, which features one of the largest steeply pitched roofs in Europe. Another significant landmark is the Triton Fountain, built in the early 18th century and modeled after Bernini's baroque fountains in Rome. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Nysa was developed by the Prussians into one of Europe's strongest fortresses, with extensive fortifications and bastions that remain largely intact today. The city’s history is defined by its role as an educational and cultural hub, reflected in its Baroque palaces and the former Jesuit College. Despite suffering heavy damage in 1945, Nysa has meticulously restored many of its historical assets. Today, it is a regional educational center and a gateway to the nearby Nysa Reservoir, offering various recreational activities.
