Giszowiec is an extraordinary district of Katowice, representing a living example of the early 20th-century garden city movement. Built between 1907 and 1910 for the miners of the Giesche mine, it was designed by architects Georg and Emil Zillmann. The design was inspired by traditional Silesian peasant villages, creating an idyllic residential settlement of two-story workers' cottages, each with its own garden, amidst the heavily industrialized region of Upper Silesia. A walk through Giszowiec feels like stepping back in time. Many of the original houses, public buildings, and characteristic green spaces have been preserved, giving the district a tranquil, village-like atmosphere that stands in stark contrast to the rest of Katowice. The heart of the district is 'Pod Lipami' (Under the Linden Trees) Square, serving as a social and commercial hub. The entire historic layout is protected as a monument. As part of Katowice, Giszowiec is easily accessible by public transport. It gives a fascinating perspective on industrial history and early 20th-century social reforms. Visitors can enjoy Silesian cuisine at local restaurants. It's a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts looking to explore a different side of Poland's industrial heartland.
