Rejvíz Nature Reserve (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The Rejvíz National Nature Reserve, located in the Jeseníky Mountains, is the largest and most significant raised peat bog in Moravia. The 396-hectare area lies on a plateau at an altitude of approximately 740 meters and is distinguished by its unique bog vegetation. The heart of the reserve is the Great Moss Lake (Velké mechové jezírko), a dark water body surrounded by thick layers of peat moss. The peat layers here reach a depth of up to three meters and began forming some 6,000 to 7,000 years ago. The flora includes rare species such as the carnivorous sundew and the dwarf birch, a relic from the Ice Age. The area is accessible via a historic wooden board walk that guides visitors safely through the delicate ecosystem. Beyond its ecological importance, Rejvíz is also culturally significant, particularly due to the mountain village of the same name with its typical wooden houses, where chairs are often decorated with carved faces of villagers. The bog has been under state protection since 1955 to permanently preserve this relic of natural history.
