Bytom Old Town reflects the rich and complex history of one of Upper Silesia's oldest cities. Bytom was granted city rights under Magdeburg law as early as 1254, leading to a planned medieval urban layout centered around a large Market Square. For centuries, the town was a vital hub for silver and lead mining, which provided the foundation for its early economic prosperity. During the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution transformed Bytom into a powerhouse of coal mining and heavy industry, resulting in the construction of grand eclectic and Art Nouveau buildings. St. Mary's Church, originally built in the 13th century and later remodeled in the Baroque style, remains one of the most valuable architectural monuments in the center. Despite damage during World War II and subsequent neglect during the communist era, the medieval street pattern and many historic facades have survived. Today, the Old Town is undergoing extensive revitalization to restore its architectural heritage and urban vibrancy.
