Nysa, one of the oldest cities in Silesia, earned the nickname 'Silesian Rome' due to its exceptional concentration of churches and grand architectural monuments. For centuries, the Old Town served as the capital of the Duchy of Nysa and the primary residence of the Prince-Bishops of Wrocław, resulting in a period of immense cultural and economic growth. The skyline is dominated by the monumental Basilica of St. James and St. Agnes, which features one of Europe's steepest roofs and a treasury filled with priceless liturgical artifacts. Beside it stands the detached Gothic bell tower, a prominent landmark that remained unfinished yet imposing. The central Market Square is adorned with the Beautiful Well (Piękna Studnia) from 1701, a masterpiece of Baroque metalwork. Despite sustaining nearly 80% destruction at the end of World War II, meticulous restoration efforts have brought back to life the Prince-Bishop's Palace and several ornate Baroque townhouses. Today, Nysa continues to be a vital center for art history and education, blending its episcopal heritage with modern urban life.
