Limanowa is set in the easy on the eye landscape of the Island Beskids (Beskid Wyspowy), a unique mountain range characterized by its isolated, island-like peaks. The town is an important regional center and a popular destination for tourists seeking nature and active recreation. Its history is also marked by the World War I Battle of Limanowa, one of the largest battles on the Eastern Front, commemorated by several military cemeteries in the area. The spiritual heart of the city is the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows, which houses a miraculous Pieta statue and is a major pilgrimage site. Architecturally, the basilica is an impressive example of the Neo-Baroque style. For outdoor enthusiasts, Limanowa is the well-suited starting point for hikes to the surrounding peaks, such as Miejska Góra, which features a tall metal cross and gives expansive views, or Łysa Góra. In winter, the nearby ski resorts attract winter sports lovers. Getting to Limanowa is easy from Kraków, which is about 70 kilometers away, by car or by regularly running minibuses. The best times to visit are summer for hiking and winter for skiing. The local cuisine has specialties of the Goral culture, including Oscypek (smoked sheep cheese) and Kwaśnica (a sour cabbage soup), which should be tried in the regional inns.
