Bochnia is one of the oldest cities in Poland, located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, approximately 40 kilometers east of Krakow. The city's history is inextricably linked to salt mining; the Bochnia Salt Mine was founded in 1248, making it even older than the more famous mine in Wieliczka. For centuries, this 'white gold' formed the economic backbone of both the city and the entire Polish state. The historic mine is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and provides visitors fascinating insights into medieval mining techniques. Beyond the mine, Bochnia features a characterful old town with the Gothic Basilica of St. Nicholas, renowned for its ornate interior and the Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of Bochnia. Today, the city serves as a key cultural and tourist destination, preserving its mining heritage while providing modern infrastructure for residents and visitors alike.
