It became famous for the Jelcz Automobile Factory, which produced buses, trucks, and other heavy vehicles from 1952 until 2008, becoming a symbol of post-war Polish industry. The town was formed in 1987 by the merger of the villages of Jelcz and Laskowice Oławskie.
