Brzeg Castle (Poland)

Weather…

Brzeg Castle, widely known as the 'Silesian Wawel,' is one of the most magnificent Renaissance residences in Central Europe. Its current form was established in the 16th century under Duke George II, who commissioned Italian architects to transform the medieval stronghold into a grand palace. The most striking feature of the castle is the main gatehouse portal, adorned with a unique gallery of stone-carved busts depicting Polish kings and Piast dukes, an unparalleled display of dynastic pride. The castle's courtyard, with its elegant tiered arcades, closely mirrors the Royal Wawel Castle in Kraków, reflecting the high cultural status of the Silesian Piast dynasty. Today, the castle houses the Museum of the Silesian Piasts, which features an extensive collection of regional history, including royal sarcophagi and historical weaponry. Despite being heavily damaged by Prussian bombardment in 1741, the castle has been meticulously restored and stands as a primary symbol of Silesian heritage and its historical ties to the Polish monarchy.
