Megantoni Sanctuary (Peru)

Weather…

The Megantoni National Sanctuary is a hidden emerald jewel located in the Cusco region, protecting the spectacular Pongo de Mainique, a dramatic water gap where the Urubamba River carves through the last range of the Andes to enter the Amazon basin. This remote and sacred canyon is surrounded by towering cliffs draped in hundreds of waterfalls, creating a landscape of mystical beauty that is deeply significant to the Machiguenga people. The sanctuary protects a vast range of pristine ecosystems, from high Andean cloud forests to lowland rainforests, and is home to a staggering variety of wildlife, including jaguars, macaws, and the rare Andean bear. Because of its extreme isolation, Megantoni remains one of the best-preserved and least-explored wilderness areas in Peru, a true sanctuary for the spirit of the Amazon.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The Megantoni Sanctuary is hard to reach, but the dry season from May to October makes the river and trail journey easier. During this time, paths are less muddy and wildlife observation in the transition zone between the Andes and Amazon is more favourable.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning between 5 and 8 am is best for hearing and seeing birds and monkeys in the canopy. Late afternoon before sunset sees many mammals becoming active - plan your hikes for these times.
📜
Etiquette
The sanctuary is strictly protected - you need a permit from the Peruvian environmental authority SERNANP to visit. Leave no trash, make no fire, and do not disturb wildlife - stay on trails.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, waterproof footwear and insect repellent are essential - especially in the swampy transition zone. A waterproof cover for camera and phone, plus binoculars for canopy observation, are strongly recommended.
🧭
Getting there
The Megantoni Sanctuary is located in southern Peru near the town of Quillabamba. Access requires a multi‑hour boat trip on the Urubamba River followed by a rainforest hike - only possible with an experienced guide.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife density is lower than in lower Amazon areas - sightings are rare and require many hours of quiet watching. Focus on the experience of pristine nature, not only on the animals.
