Cristo Blanco (Peru)

Weather…

Cristo Blanco is a monumental statue of Christ with outstretched arms, perched majestically on Pukamuqu Hill overlooking the city of Cusco. The eight-meter-high figure was erected in 1945 as a gift from Christian Arabs of Palestinian origin who had settled in Cusco and wanted to express their gratitude for the city's hospitality. The statue was designed by local artist Francisco Olazo Allende and constructed from granite and white marble dust, which gives it its characteristic brilliant glow. From its vantage point, visitors can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of Cusco's historic center, the surrounding Andean peaks, and the nearby fortress of Sacsayhuamán. At night, Cristo Blanco is brightly illuminated, serving as a prominent landmark visible from nearly every corner of the city. The gesture of open arms symbolizes peace and protection over the former capital of the Inca Empire. Since Pukamuqu Hill was considered a sacred location in Incan mythology, the statue today symbolically bridges Christian traditions with ancient Andean history. It remains a beloved site for both tourists and the local community.
