Jebel Harim, known as the 'Mountain of Women', is the highest peak in the Musandam Peninsula of northern Oman, reaching an elevation of 2,087 meters above sea level. The name derives from a local legend suggesting that women would seek refuge on the summit during pirate raids to escape capture. Geologically, the mountain is of extraordinary interest because its high-altitude plateau is covered with fossilized marine life, including corals and mollusks, which serve as evidence that these limestone strata were once part of the Tethys Ocean floor. The stark, weather-beaten landscape has expansive views over the dramatic fjords of Musandam and the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Due to its elevation, Jebel Harim experiences much cooler temperatures than the surrounding coastal plains, with frost occasionally occurring during the winter months. The drive to the summit is considered one of the most spectacular mountain tracks in the Middle East, requiring a four-wheel-drive vehicle to navigate the steep, winding terrain. Today, the summit serves as an important site for meteorological monitoring and telecommunications, while the fossil beds continue to attract geologists from around the world.
