Juodupė is an industrial town in northeastern Lithuania, located within the Rokiškis district along the banks of the Juodupė River. The town's history is inextricably linked to the development of the textile industry, which began at the turn of the 20th century. In 1907, one of the country's first cloth factories was established here, later becoming nationally famous under the name 'Nemunas' and driving the rapid growth of the settlement. Originally mentioned as a village in 1769, Juodupė underwent a significant transformation into an urban center due to industrialization. The town's architecture clearly reflects its industrial past, characterized by functional residential blocks for factory workers and social infrastructure built during the Soviet era. During World War II, Juodupė suffered extensive damage but was rebuilt in the post-war years as a major hub for wool processing and manufacturing. Surrounded by dense forests and marshlands, the area surrounding the town today is known for its biodiversity and opportunities for outdoor activities. Despite ongoing economic shifts, Juodupė remains a poignant symbol of Lithuanian industrial heritage and the enduring legacy of its working-class community.
