Sauka Ridge (Latvia)

Weather…

The Sauka Ridge (Saukas valnis) is a prominent geomorphological unit in the heart of the Augstzeme Highland in southern Latvia. This elevation is characterized by an elongated crest formed by the immense forces of glacial movements during the last Ice Age. The highest point of the ridge is Ormaņkalns, reaching an elevation of 165 meters above sea level and offering wide panoramic views over Lake Sauka and the surrounding valleys. Geologically, the ridge consists of a complex stratification of terminal moraine material, including clay, sand, and rock fragments. Historically, the region was an important settlement area for the Selonian people, with the ridge serving as a natural boundary and defensive line. The landscape is currently protected under the Sauka Nature Park, which encompasses a variety of habitats such as raised bogs, mixed forests, and species-rich meadows. Preserving the Sauka Ridge is vital for protecting regional biodiversity and provides key insights into the post-glacial formation of the Baltic relief.
