Wadi Ghalilah (United Arab Emirates)

Weather…

Wadi Ghalilah is an impressive valley in Ras Al Khaimah, known for its extremely steep rock walls and challenging hiking trails. Located in the north of the emirate near the coast, it cuts deep into the Hajar Mountains. The wadi is particularly famous for the 'Stairway to Heaven', a trail inspired by ancient shepherd paths that challenges hikers with its near-vertical climbs and narrow ridges. Geologically, Wadi Ghalilah features spectacular views of massive limestone formations that rise nearly vertically for over a thousand metres in some places. A large dam was constructed at the entrance of the wadi to capture rainwater and protect surrounding settlements from flash floods. During the winter months, the often dry riverbed transforms into a rushing torrent after heavy rains. The raw beauty of the environment makes it one of the most spectacular relief features in the entire UAE.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Wadi Ghalilah is located in Ras Al Khaimah and is reachable from Dubai in about two hours via the E11 road. The road leads to the base of the mountains, where hiking trails branch off into the steep and rugged Hajar terrain.
📅
Best season
The best time for hiking is from November to March, when temperatures are pleasantly cool. During the summer months, extreme heat prevails, making hiking in this exposed and shadeless terrain potentially life-threatening.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is extremely steep, rocky, and demanding, famous for the 'Stairway to Heaven' route. Hikers must navigate loose scree, narrow ridges, and rocky ledges, requiring excellent sure-footedness and a good head for heights.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality hiking boots with excellent grip are absolutely necessary for the rocky paths. Bring at least 3-4 liters of water, energy snacks, a headlamp for emergencies, and effective sun protection for the entire duration of the hike.
🅿️
Parking
At the end of the access road in Ghalilah village, there are limited parking spaces available for hikers. Ensure your vehicle does not obstruct local traffic, as roads are narrow, and park only on stable, level ground.
⚠️
Safety
The hiking trails are technically very difficult and involve risks of falls; never go alone and do not overestimate your fitness level. Watch for weather changes, as rain can make the rocks extremely slippery and trigger rockfalls.
⏱️
Time needed
A hike in this area lasts between 5 and 10 hours depending on the chosen route, often requiring a full day. Start the tour as early as possible, ideally at dawn, to avoid the midday heat and the risk of being caught in the dark.
