Dviete Floodplain Nature Park (Latvia)

Weather…

The Dviete Floodplain Nature Park in southeastern Latvia is one of the best-preserved natural river floodplains in Europe. The park stretches along the Dviete River and covers an area of 4,989 hectares, characterized by seasonal flooding and species-rich wet meadows. Historically, the valley has been inhabited for millennia, as evidenced by Stone Age archaeological finds. In the 20th century, parts of the river were straightened, but in recent years, extensive restoration projects have been carried out to reinstate the natural meandering course. Today, the Dviete floodplain is a key area for the protection of migratory birds and hosts large herds of Konik horses and Heck cattle that keep the meadows open. These animals act as 'natural lawnmowers', promoting the settlement of rare plant and bird species such as the corn crake. An information center at the 'Gulbi' farm features educational programs and guided tours through this dynamic river landscape.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this extensive floodplain usually requires traveling on rural roads leading to specific observation towers or visitor centers. Access can heavily depend on the water levels, as some roads may be submerged during significant spring floods.
📅
Best season
Early spring is the absolute peak season when the floodplain is inundated with water and hosts thousands of migrating birds. Summer provides a different perspective, with lush, green wetland meadows replacing the temporary spring lakes.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is overwhelmingly flat and consists of vast wetland meadows, marshes, and the slowly winding course of the river. Visitors will typically stick to elevated wooden boardwalks or specific dirt tracks to avoid the muddy, saturated ground.
🎒
What to bring
Rubber boots or highly waterproof hiking shoes are practically mandatory, as the ground is often sodden or partially flooded. High-quality binoculars or a spotting scope are essential tools for observing the abundant birdlife from a distance.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is generally provided near the main visitor information points, birdwatching towers, or at the start of boardwalk trails. These parking areas are usually functional and unpaved, blending in with the surrounding rural landscape.
⚠️
Safety
Venturing off the established paths or boardwalks is highly discouraged due to the risk of getting stuck in deep mud or hidden bogs. During the peak flood season, water currents over the meadows can be deceptively strong, requiring careful observation.
⏱️
Time needed
A comprehensive visit involving walks along the boardwalks and time spent in the observation towers typically takes three to five hours. Serious birdwatchers might easily spend from dawn until dusk patiently observing the diverse avian species present.
