Ilūkste is a historical town in southeastern Latvia, located near the Lithuanian border in the region of Selonia. The town was first mentioned in 1550 and developed into a significant regional center due to its location along vital trade routes. Historically, Ilūkste was known for its religious diversity, housing churches of various denominations, including Catholic, Lutheran, and Orthodox communities. During World War I, the town was almost entirely destroyed as it lay directly on the frontline. Following its reconstruction during the interwar period, Ilūkste maintained its importance as an administrative and cultural hub for the surrounding agricultural region. Today's architecture is characterized by post-war buildings and a few surviving historical structures. The town is also recognized for its active sports life and modern sports infrastructure.
