Al Jalali Fort (Oman)

Weather…

Al Jalali Fort, guarding Muscat's harbor, is one of Oman's most iconic forts. It was built by the Portuguese in the 1580s on the foundations of an older fort and was originally named Forte de São João. Together with its counterpart, Al Mirani Fort, it secured Muscat Bay and controlled maritime trade in the Gulf of Oman. After the Portuguese were expelled in 1650, the fort was used and expanded by Omani rulers. In the 20th century, it served as the country's main prison, earning it a fearsome reputation. Today, Al Jalali has been converted into a private museum for Omani history and royal heritage, accessible only by invitation. Its imposing appearance on a rocky outcrop makes it a remarkable landmark.
