Port Sultan Qaboos, located in the historic Muttrah district of Muscat, served as Oman's primary maritime gateway for decades. Opened in 1974 during the reign of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, it marked the beginning of the Sultanate's modern economic era. The port originally functioned as the main hub for container transshipment and general commercial cargo. Due to limited space and the growth of the capital, most commercial activities were relocated to the new Port of Sohar. Since 2014, the port has been undergoing a transformation into a specialized tourism and cruise ship hub. The 'Mina Al Sultan Qaboos' project aims to redevelop the area into a luxury waterfront destination featuring hotels, restaurants, and residential complexes. Nevertheless, the port remains a symbol of Oman's seafaring heritage and continues to host the royal yachts.

What is this place?
Port Sultan Qaboos in Muttrah was once Oman's primary commercial port and has been transformed in recent years into a premier destination for cruise ships and yachts. Today it serves as a gateway for tourism and a cultural meeting point, reflecting Oman's maritime history.
Visiting
The port is accessible to cruise passengers and visitors of the adjacent Muttrah Souk, with public areas along the waterfront promenade. The berths themselves are typically not open to the public, but the promenade features excellent views of the ships.
Where to view it
The best viewpoint of the port is from the Corniche in Muttrah, especially near the traditional souk. From there, one has an unobstructed view of the anchored cruise ships and traditional dhows in the harbor basin.
Local products
Traditional Omani products such as frankincense, silver jewelry, and handwoven textiles are offered in the region, available at the nearby Muttrah Souk. Fresh seafood and dates are also local specialties that visitors can sample.

The port is busiest during the cruise season from October to April, when many ships call. During the annual Khareef festival in Dhofar (July to September), tourist traffic also increases, though the cruise season is quieter then.
