Muttrah is the historic port district of the capital region of Muscat, located directly on the Gulf of Oman. With about 150,000 inhabitants, the district connects the old port areas with modern business districts. The Muttrah Souq, one of the oldest market districts in the Arab world, is a labyrinth of narrow alleys where frankincense, silver jewelry, khanjar daggers, and spices have been traded for centuries. The Muttrah Corniche, a three-kilometer-long waterfront promenade, was modernized in the 1980s under Sultan Qaboos. Overlooking the harbor is the Portuguese Muttrah Fort, dating from 1580, built during the Portuguese occupation (1507-1650). The deep-sea port of Mina Sultan Qaboos was the country's most important port for decades.
