Muttrah Fort, perched on a rocky hill overlooking Muttrah harbor and the souq, is another significant 16th-century Portuguese fortification. Although an earlier Omani fortification existed on the site, the Portuguese expanded it after their capture of Muscat in 1507 to protect the harbor. The fort, with its three circular towers, served as a vital military outpost for monitoring naval traffic and defending against attacks from both sea and land. After the Portuguese were expelled, Omani rulers continued to use the fort. Closed to the public for a long period, Muttrah Fort was reopened in 2018 after extensive restoration work. Today, it has visitors an insight into the region's military history and remarkable panoramic views of Muttrah and the Gulf of Oman.

Visiting
The historic Muttrah Fort, built in 1507 and later expanded, can be visited both from the outside and within its restored interior spaces. Visitors can thoroughly explore the ancient fortress walls and enjoy fantastic panoramic views.

The fortress is typically open to visitors during regular daytime hours, though exact times may vary slightly depending on the season. It is particularly advisable to visit the site in the late afternoon to avoid the intense midday heat.
Photography
Photographing the historical architecture and the spectacular view of the harbor is normally permitted without any restrictions for private use. The old Portuguese cannons and massive defensive walls offer fantastic subjects for photos.
Time needed
To enjoy a relaxed exploration of the entire complex and take in the magnificent coastal views, you should plan for about one hour of your time. This duration is perfectly adequate to peacefully examine the historic architecture.

A visit can be excellently combined with a leisurely stroll along the easy on the eye Corniche or a detailed exploration of the nearby traditional market. The renowned National Museum can also be reached quite quickly from this location.
Getting there
The fort is easily accessible by car or local taxi via the highly pretty coastal road leading from central Muscat. Note, however, that the final section of the path up to the fortress may involve climbing some steep sets of stairs.
Insider tip
If you plan to visit the fortress in the late afternoon, you can observe a truly panoramic sunset over the beautiful Arabian Sea. Be absolutely sure to bring plenty of drinking water with you, as the local temperatures are frequently high.
