Muttrah Souq (Oman)

Weather…

Muttrah Souq, one of the oldest marketplaces in the Arab world, is a labyrinth of narrow alleys located in the heart of Muttrah, near the Muscat Corniche. Its traditional Arab character has been preserved despite modernizations. The souq is known for its unique atmosphere, filled with the scent of frankincense and sandalwood. The shops sell a variety of goods, including Omani artifacts like khanjars (traditional daggers), silver jewelry, textiles, spices, and pottery. It is also an excellent place to taste and buy Omani halwa, a traditional sweet. The market is divided into different sections, some for gold, others for textiles, and still others for household goods. Part of the souq is covered, which has earned it the local name 'Al Dhalam Souq' (The Dark Market). Bargaining is common and expected, adding to the shopping experience.
