The site's history began in 1918 with the construction of the Glomfjord power station, which supplied the necessary energy for nitrogen fertilizer production. Today, the area is primarily utilized by Yara International, which operates one of the world's most efficient production complexes for NPK fertilizer and calcium nitrate here. During World War II, the plant was the target of "Operation Musketoon," a British-Norwegian commando raid aimed at destroying the power supply for the aluminum production of that era. Geographically, Glomfjord lies at the foot of the Svartisen glacier, whose meltwater provides a constant and renewable source of energy for the local industry. In addition to chemical production, companies from the solar energy and aquaculture sectors have established themselves at the site, promoting economic diversification. This combination of extreme nature and high-tech industry makes Glomfjord a unique location in Norwegian industrial history.
