The Vinica Fortress, locally known as Viničko Kale, is a significant archaeological site situated on a hill overlooking the town of Vinica in eastern North Macedonia. This Late Antique fortification reached its peak between the 4th and 6th centuries AD, serving as a strategic military and administrative center within the Byzantine Empire. The site gained international prominence in 1985 following the discovery of the "Vinica Icons," which are unique terracotta reliefs depicting early Christian motifs and saints. The fortress covers an area of approximately 2.5 hectares and features remains of thick defensive walls, storehouses, and sacral buildings. Its strategic position allowed for the control of the Kočani Valley and the protection of regional trade routes. Archaeological evidence suggests that the hill has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, maintaining its importance through the medieval era as a vital stronghold.

Visiting
Vinica Fortress (Viničko Kale) is an archaeological site on a hill above the town and can be freely visited at any time. Access to the site is free as it is an open area, but some sections are cordoned off for safety reasons.
Typical hours
As it is an open-air archaeological site, there are no fixed visiting hours; access is possible around the clock. A daytime visit is recommended as the paths are unlit.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the fortress grounds and has spectacular views of Vinica and the surroundings. For detailed shots of the terracotta icons in the nearby museum, a permit is required.
Time needed
Allow about 45 minutes to an hour for the climb and exploration of the fortress. If you also want to explore the surrounding paths, budget 90 minutes.

The fortress is located above Vinica, so a visit to the Vinica City Museum in the valley, which displays the terracotta icons, is a good combination. The town center of Vinica with its cafés is also worth a detour.
Getting there
The ascent to the fortress is on foot via a marked hiking trail that starts at the edge of Vinica. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the path is rocky and steep in places.
Insider tip
Bring enough water as there are no supply facilities on the hill. Visit the fortress in the late afternoon to experience the sunset over the town.
