The Matka Monastery, officially dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, is tucked away in the striking Matka Canyon, about 15 kilometers southwest of Skopje. The current church was built in 1389/1390 and is a superb example of late Byzantine sacral architecture in the region. The church was founded by members of the local noble Bojko family, whose portraits are preserved among the interior frescoes. The inner walls are adorned with valuable murals from the late 15th century, depicting biblical scenes and saints in an expressive style. For centuries, the monastery served as an important spiritual center, providing refuge for scholars and monks during the Ottoman period. Today, the monastery is a popular destination for hikers and tourists visiting the canyon and serves as a starting point for boat tours on Lake Matka. The surrounding nature, with its steep cliffs and rare plant species, lends the site a meditative and timeless atmosphere.
