Church of Saint Panteleimon in Gorno Nerezi (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Church of Saint Panteleimon in Gorno Nerezi, near Skopje, is a masterpiece of medieval Byzantine art and architecture. It was commissioned in 1164 by Alexios Angelos Komnenos, a member of the imperial Byzantine family, as evidenced by a surviving marble inscription. The church follows a cross-in-square design with five domes, constructed using alternating layers of stone and brick. It is world-renowned for its extraordinary frescoes, particularly the 'Lamentation of Christ,' which displays a level of emotional depth and human realism that was revolutionary for the 12th century. Many art historians consider these paintings to be early precursors to the humanism of the Italian Renaissance. The artists employed vivid pigments and dynamic compositions that broke away from the stiff traditions of the time. Despite sustaining damage from major earthquakes in 1555 and 1963, the original 12th-century paintings were meticulously restored in the 20th century. Today, the church serves as a vital cultural monument of the Middle Byzantine period.
