It was built in 1389 under the patronage of Prince Andrijaš, the son of King Vukašin and brother of the famous Prince Marko. The structure features a compact cross-in-square design with a single central dome, constructed from a harmonious mix of local stone and brick. The interior walls are almost entirely covered in high-quality frescoes painted by the masters Metropolitan Jovan and Deacon Grigorije. These artworks are celebrated for their realistic portrayal of biblical figures and emotional depth, marking a significant transition in late Byzantine art. Because the church was historically accessible only by narrow mountain paths or by water, its secluded location provided protection from various invasions over the centuries.
