Govrlevo Neolithic Settlement (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Govrlevo Neolithic Settlement is located in the municipality of Sopište, south of Skopje, and is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Balkans. Excavations that began in the 1980s revealed settlement layers dating back to the 6th millennium BC. The site gained worldwide fame through the discovery of the ceramic figurine known as 'Adam of Macedonia' (Makedonski Adam). This statuette, depicting a seated male figure, is dated to approximately 4,000 to 6,000 BC and is considered one of the oldest examples of realistic anthropomorphic art in Europe. The Govrlevo settlement provided vital evidence regarding the beginnings of agriculture, pottery, and social organization of the region's early inhabitants. In addition to figurines, foundations of houses, stone and bone tools, and numerous pottery fragments were unearthed. The finds are currently exhibited at the Museum of the City of Skopje. Govrlevo remains a key location for understanding the transition from hunter-gatherer cultures to settled farming communities.
