Kurshumli An (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Kurshumli An is a historic Ottoman caravanserai located in the Old Bazaar of Skopje, representing one of the finest examples of Islamic secular architecture in the region. Built in the mid-16th century, likely around 1540 by Muslihuddin Abdul Gani, it served as an inn for traveling merchants and their livestock. The name 'Kurshumli' originates from the Turkish word for lead, as its roof was originally covered with lead plates. The building features a spacious rectangular courtyard surrounded by two floors of arched galleries supported by sturdy pillars. The ground floor was used for stables and storage of goods, while the upper floor contained living quarters for guests. Its massive stone construction and thick walls provided both insulation and security for the international trade routes passing through Skopje. Following the 1963 earthquake, the inn was restored and now houses the lapidary collection of the Archaeological Museum of North Macedonia. Today, it stands as a testament to the city's importance as a commercial hub during the Ottoman era.
