Sultan Murat Mosque (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Sultan Murat Mosque, also known as the Hünkâr Mosque, is one of the most significant Ottoman architectural monuments in Skopje. It was commissioned in 1436 by the Ottoman Sultan Murat II and is located on a hill within the Old Bazaar district. Architecturally, it is a three-aisled basilica with a hipped roof, a style characteristic of early Ottoman architecture in the Balkans. Throughout its history, the building has been damaged several times, most notably by the Great Fire of Skopje in 1689 and the 1963 earthquake. The prominent Clock Tower (Saat Kula) of Skopje, built at the end of the 16th century, is also situated within the mosque's courtyard. The complex further includes two türbes (mausoleums) where members of the royal family and local dignitaries are interred. The mosque underwent extensive restoration between 2016 and 2020 to restore its original grandeur and structural integrity.
