💡 Tips
- The lake mud is famously medicinal; don't hesitate to rub it on your skin at the local beaches and let it dry in the sun.
- Mosquitoes can be quite active on summer evenings near the water; bring a reliable insect repellent.
- Ask locals about the traditional 'mandra' fishing huts, where fishermen historically used birds to chase fish into enclosures.
- Many smaller lakeside kiosks and vendors only accept cash, so always have some Macedonian Denars handy.
- The lake water is very shallow and gets warm quickly in the summer, making it good and safe for families with young children.
🍽 Food
Don't miss the local specialty: carp fish baked traditionally wrapped in reeds, available at most lakeside restaurants.
Start your meal with the hearty local fish soup, often prepared with the daily catch from the lake.
Try these small, crispy fried lake fish, served like fries and great to eat with a cold local beer.

The Mediterranean climate here is first-rate for olives; buy fresh olives or oil directly from stalls in the town center.
Look for locally grown and dried persimmons, a sweet treat you can find at the small markets during the cooler months.
Walk up the hill to these evocative church ruins for a peaceful atmosphere and a panoramic view of the lake.
Head to the small wooden fishing piers right at sunrise; the mirror-like water and complete silence are magical.
Water temperature…
Dojran is located in the southeastern corner of North Macedonia, bordering Greece. The lake is famous for its shallow, warm waters and high iodine content, making it a sought-after destination for those seeking relief from respiratory and skin conditions. The most unique cultural feature is the ancient 'mandra' fishing technique, where fishermen use cormorants to drive fish into reed enclosures. The town was almost completely leveled during World War I as it sat directly on the Salonica Front. The skeletal remains of the St. Elijah Church serve as a powerful monument to this period. Today, Star Dojran has been rebuilt as a lively summer resort with a long lakefront promenade, numerous cafes, and beaches that offer a Mediterranean-like atmosphere. Local cuisine is centered around lake fish, with 'Dojran Carp' being a must-try dish for visitors. The area is easily accessible by car from Skopje via the main highway toward Gevgelija. The best time to visit is during the summer months when the water temperature reaches 27°C, though the mild climate makes it pleasant in late spring as well.
