SORAZ Refinery

The SORAZ refinery (Société de Raffinage de Zinder), located about 50 kilometers north of the city of Zinder, is Niger's first domestic oil refinery. Commissioned in November 2011, the facility marked the beginning of Niger's era as an oil-producing and refining nation. It operates as a joint venture between the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), holding 60% interest, and the Nigerien government. The refinery processes crude oil supplied from the Agadem oil fields in the east via a 462-kilometer-long pipeline. With a capacity of approximately 20,000 barrels per day, SORAZ produces gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), satisfying domestic demand and providing a surplus for export to neighboring countries like Nigeria and Mali. The facility is crucial for Niger's energy independence and has helped stabilize fuel prices within the country. Beyond production, the refinery serves as a major industrial hub, providing high-skilled employment and technical training for the local workforce.
