Lake Léré (Chad)

Weather…

Lake Léré is located in the Mayo-Kebbi Ouest region of southwestern Chad and serves as a significant inland water body within the Niger River basin. It covers an area of approximately 135 square kilometers and, together with the neighboring Lake Trené, forms an ecologically valuable wetland system. Since 2005, the area has been recognized as a RAMSAR site of international importance, providing a crucial habitat for various endangered species. Notably, it is one of the few places in Central Africa where the West African manatee can still be found in significant numbers. Geologically, the lake sits in a depression fed by the Mayo Kébbi River, playing a vital role in local fisheries and supporting the agricultural needs of the surrounding communities. The shoreline vegetation consists primarily of gallery forests and extensive reed beds, which offer handy nesting conditions for a wide variety of migratory and resident waterbirds.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to this shallow lake is primarily via dirt roads leading from the town of Léré in southwestern Chad. Traveling during the dry season is highly recommended as roads can become impassable after heavy rains.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is generally between November and March when the weather is drier and slightly cooler. Wildlife viewing, including spotting the famous local manatees, is often more successful during these months.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The surrounding terrain is mostly flat savanna and wetlands, with soft and muddy shorelines. Navigating the immediate edge of the water can be challenging on foot due to the soft silt and dense shoreline vegetation.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, waterproof boots are essential if you plan to walk near the marshy shores. Carry plenty of drinking water, effective insect repellent, and sun protection, as shade can be quite sparse around the lake perimeter.

Parking
There are typically no formal parking lots available in this remote natural setting. Visitors usually leave their vehicles in the nearby town of Léré or at a secure spot negotiated with local guides before heading to the water.
⚠️
Safety
Always arrange for a reliable local guide who understands the regional conditions and wildlife habits. Be cautious of waterborne diseases and avoid wading into the lake, as crocodiles and hippopotamuses may also be present.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical guided tour to observe the lake and search for manatees takes about three to four hours. Factor in additional travel time for the slow drive to and from the lake area from the nearest permanent settlements.
