Sluis (Netherlands)

Weather…

Sluis is a photogenic fortified town in the southwestern corner of the Netherlands, located in the province of Zeeland, right on the Belgian border. As part of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, the town features a distinctive Flemish character in both its architecture and its culinary scene. Its most famous landmark is the Belfry of Sluis, the only one of its kind in the entire country. Part of the town hall, this 14th-century tower now houses an interactive museum telling the story of the town and its legendary mechanical bell-ringer, Jantje van Sluis. In the Middle Ages, Sluis was a crucial outport for the city of Bruges and the site of the significant naval Battle of Sluys in 1340. Although the silting of the Zwin estuary eventually ended its days as a major seaport, the town's impressive defensive ramparts have been well-preserved. Today, visitors can walk along the high earthen walls that encircle the town, offering beautiful views of the moats and the surrounding polder landscape. The historic city gates, such as the Westpoort, remain as reminders of its strategic military importance. Modern Sluis is widely known as a premier shopping and dining destination. Remarkably for the Netherlands, shops here are open seven days a week, making it a favorite weekend spot for visitors from across the border. The town features a high density of excellent restaurants and cozy terraces, often serving fresh North Sea seafood and regional delicacies. Its combination of historic charm, high-end shopping, and proximity to the North Sea beaches of Cadzand makes it a great day-trip destination.
