Water temperature…
Damme is a beautifully preserved medieval town in Flanders, located just a few kilometers northeast of Bruges. Once the bustling outport for Bruges in the Middle Ages, its importance declined as the waterway silted up. This decline, however, preserved its historic character, leaving a welcoming village surrounded by a scenic polder landscape. The town is traversed by the straight, tree-lined Damme Canal, handy for boat trips or cycling along its banks. The town is famous for its literary connections, particularly to the legend of Till Eulenspiegel, a famous trickster from German and Flemish folklore who is said to have died here. Today, Damme cultivates its literary heritage and is known as a 'book town,' with numerous bookshops and a monthly book market. Architectural highlights include the Gothic Town Hall (Stadhuis) and the imposing Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk), whose unfinished tower can be climbed for panoramic views. Damme is easily reached from Bruges by bicycle (a very popular option), bus, or even by a historic paddle steamer that operates on the canal. The journey from Bruges is part of the experience, passing through typical Flemish countryside. The best time to visit is from spring to autumn when the weather is pleasant for exploring on foot and enjoying the outdoor cafes. Damme has a quiet and characterful alternative to the bustle of nearby Bruges.
