Bergen op Zoom is a historic fortified city in the province of North Brabant, situated near the border with Zeeland. The city was granted municipal rights as early as 1212 and grew into a significant trading and military outpost due to its strategic location on the Zoommeer. An architectural masterpiece is the Markiezenhof, a late Gothic city palace dating from the 15th century that once served as the residence for the Lords of Bergen op Zoom. The city witnessed numerous sieges, particularly during the Eighty Years' War, earning it the nickname 'La Pucelle' (The Virgin) because it remained unconquered for a long period. The historic center features narrow medieval streets, ancient churches like the Sint-Gertrudiskerk, and remnants of old city walls, including the Gevangenpoort gateway. Today, Bergen op Zoom is an important regional hub, blending historical tourism with modern industrial sectors that benefit from the proximity to the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam.
