Zwin Nature Park (Belgium)

Weather…

The Zwin Nature Park, situated on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands, is one of the most vital ecological wetlands on the North Sea coast. Established in 1952, this reserve covers approximately 158 hectares on the Belgian side and relies heavily on the tides, which flush nutrient-rich seawater into the area twice daily. This dynamic environment of mudflats and salt marshes creates well-suited conditions for halophilic plants, particularly sea lavender, which blankets the landscape in a sea of purple during late summer. The park is internationally renowned as an 'international airport for birds,' hosting tens of thousands of migratory birds each year. Alongside its iconic nesting white storks, the reserve provides crucial habitat for avocets, redshanks, and oystercatchers. An innovative visitor center, opened in 2016, features interactive exhibitions that profoundly enhance public understanding of this fragile and unique tidal ecosystem.

📅
Best season
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are peak migration times for waders and ducks. In winter, many geese and swans stay.
🌅
Best time of day
Best time depends on tide times - at low tide birds are on the mudflats. Morning and evening calls are loudest.
📜
Etiquette
Follow marked paths and use the observation hides. Entering the salt meadows off trails is prohibited.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are a must; a spotting scope is worth it for distant birds. Wind- and waterproof clothing is essential on the coast.
🧭
Getting there
Zwin Nature Park is right on the North Sea coast near Knokke-Heist. It is accessible by car via the N49 or by train to Knokke.
🦌
What to expect
Bird numbers can be enormous, but species change with the tides. Be patient and watch the changes on the flats.
