Weather…

Boswachterij Westerschouwen is the largest forested area in the province of Zeeland, located on the western edge of the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. This impressive coastal forest was planted at the beginning of the 20th century on the barren dunes to control blowing sand and protect the areas behind them. The landscape has a fascinating transition from dense pine forests to open dune landscapes and wet valleys. Numerous animal species live here, including roe deer, fallow deer, and a variety of songbirds that find shelter in the thick undergrowth. The exposed location on the North Sea ensures a harsh climate, which has often bizarrely shaped the growth of the trees. Extensive hiking, cycling, and riding trails crisscross the area, often leading to viewpoints with wide views over the coast. Conservation measures aim to make the forest more natural by increasingly focusing on mixed deciduous forest and leaving deadwood in the ecosystem.
