Veere (Netherlands)

Weather…

Veere was a prosperous trading city in the Middle Ages, gaining great wealth through the export of wool to Scotland. This connection is still visible today in the 'Scottish Houses' on the quay, which once served as residences and warehouses for Scottish merchants. The town is now picturesquely situated on the Veerse Meer, a popular area for sailors and water sports enthusiasts. The cityscape is dominated by the massive Grote Kerk, a late Gothic church that at times served as a barracks and hospital. The magnificent town hall with its carillon is considered one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands. Veere has preserved its medieval character almost entirely, as the city was hardly altered after its heyday. Today, Veere is a popular destination for day-trippers who stroll through the cobblestone streets and visit small art galleries. Culinary highlights include the Zeeland bolus or fresh fish at the harbor. The best time to visit is from April to October. The town is best reached by car or bicycle from Middelburg.
