Terneuzen is a major port city in the province of Zeeland, situated on the southern bank of the Western Scheldt in the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen region. The city is primarily known as the gateway to the Ghent, Terneuzen Canal, one of Europe's most vital inland waterways. Its economic significance surged in the 19th century following the canal's opening in 1827 and the subsequent construction of massive sea locks. Today, Terneuzen is a powerhouse for the chemical industry and stands as the third-largest port in the Netherlands. Culturally, the city is inextricably linked to the legend of the Flying Dutchman, as Captain Willem van der Decken is said to have hailed from Terneuzen. The cityscape is a blend of heavy industrial complexes, vast port facilities, and a pleasant town center offering views of the constant ship traffic on the Scheldt. As the principal urban center of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, it plays a key role in cross-border cooperation with Belgium.
