Middelburg (Netherlands)

Weather…

Middelburg is the cultural and administrative center of Zeeland. During the Golden Age, the city was the most important location for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) after Amsterdam, which is still reflected today in the magnificent patrician houses along the canals. The heart of the city is the Middelburg Abbey, a sprawling complex featuring the prominent 'Lange Jan' tower, which stands over 90 meters tall and has wide views over Walcheren. The Middelburg Town Hall is considered one of the most significant late-Gothic buildings in the country. Despite severe destruction during World War II, the historic city center was lovingly reconstructed, allowing visitors to experience its medieval charm once again. Canal tours are offered, providing a unique view of the old warehouses. The city is a paradise for shoppers and provides numerous weekly markets in the central market square. Culturally, the Zeeuws Museum within the abbey is. Middelburg is excellently accessible by train (Intercity connection) and via the A58 motorway. The best time to visit is year-round, with spring months being particularly beautiful for explorations on foot or by bicycle.
