Maasduinen (Netherlands)

Weather…

De Maasduinen National Park in the province of Limburg stretches as a long belt along the German border and hosts the longest river dune chain in the Netherlands. This fascinating landscape was created by the interaction of water, wind, and humans over millennia; the Meuse river deposited sand, which was later piled up into high dunes by the wind. The area encompasses an impressive variety of biotopes, including dry heathlands, extensive forests, and glistening lakes such as the Reindersmeer, which originated from a former sand quarry. De Maasduinen is an important habitat for rare animal species such as the smooth snake and the European nightjar, and in autumn, it serves as a key resting place for cranes. A special highlight is the visitor center, housed in an old bridge over the Reindersmeer canal, offering spectacular views. Hikers can experience the silence and the shifting topography of this unique border region on numerous routes.
