A major Marian pilgrimage on the Lower Rhine from May to November, with numerous processions from Germany and the Benelux countries and candlelight processions to the Chapel of Grace.
Kevelaer, located in the Lower Rhine region close to the Dutch border, is one of the most significant Marian pilgrimage destinations in Germany. The heart of this peaceful town is the Kapellenplatz, home to the striking, hexagonal Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Grace). Inside this 17th-century shrine rests a tiny copperplate engraving of the Virgin Mary, which draws hundreds of thousands of faithful visitors every year. Towering right next to it is the magnificent St. Mary's Basilica, a masterpiece of Neo-Gothic architecture boasting animated interior frescoes and intricately designed stained-glass windows. Beyond its spiritual significance, Kevelaer has a welcoming historic town center. Its winding cobblestone streets are lined with traditional red-brick houses, religious souvenir shops, local craft workshops, and cozy cafés where you can enjoy regional pastries. To delve deeper into the area's heritage, the Niederrheinisches Museum provides excellent exhibits on local history, folklore, and rural life. The surrounding flat countryside, characterized by green meadows and quiet waterways, is a paradise for cyclists. Renting a bike and exploring the scenic cross-border trails is highly recommended. The town is most lively during the pilgrimage season from May to October, filled with solemn processions and an international crowd.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
